Some people may have more time this summer to take on home reno projects. But is summer the ideal season for it? It depends. There are a few other things to consider before diving into demo this season.

When’s the best time for your light demo project?

Before you tackle a project, ask yourself the following questions:

1. Is it weather dependent? If you’re working outside, it may be more comfortable to not do it in extreme temperatures. Also think about average rain or snow fall.
2. Is there enough time? It’s smart to schedule projects around other big events in your life. Planning a vacation? You may not want to start tearing apart rooms right before you leave.
3. Is there enough money? There are certain times of year where funds may be tighter. For example, the holiday season may not be ideal to tackle expensive projects. Unless you’re asking for related gifts.

If you’re doing the demo yourself, you have more control over the schedule. But if you’re hiring help, you also have to consider when contractors have more work.

Determining demo season by project type

In general, fall and spring are popular seasons for exterior demolition because of the moderate temperatures. However, this may make it harder to hire help if you need it. To help make the timing decision easier, evaluate the scope of the work:

• Permits. If the project requires paperwork, these offices tend to be less busy in the fall and winter. This can help with project planning.
• Interior projects. Anything confined to inside the house (ex: bathroom, kitchen, flooring reno) can be done any time of year. You’re in a controlled climate and may actually get better pricing and faster turnaround if done in slower seasons.
• External projects. Fall is considered one of the best seasons for outdoor projects. The weather is comfortable and can be done before the holidays and harsh winter arrives.
• Landscaping. Late fall, once all the blooms have faded and leaves have fallen, is also a good time to redesign your garden. Spring is another alternative, especially if you’re planting.

Of course, plans can change if the project is more of an emergency. If you’re rebuilding after a flood, fire, or other time-sensitive event, there’s no time like the present.
