8 Things You Shouldn’t Throw Away This Summer

After all the backyard BBQs and summer soirées, there may be some items you’re thinking of tossing. Read this first and consider giving some items a second life or at least disposing properly.

What not to throw away this season

1. Electronics. If your device overheats in the hot sun or is splashed one too many times, look up your local e-waste facility for disposal. Many electronics, including batteries, should stay out of the trash because of the potentially hazardous materials they contain.
2. Summer wardrobe. Faded swimsuits and stretched shorts may not fit your style, but consider donating any items that are still in decent shape. There are also clothing companies that take worn items for recycling.
3. Outdoor furniture. If your table and chairs need repair, think about how much you can save by fixing and/or refinishing your set instead of tossing it. Also consider reselling or donating any desirable pieces.
4. Outdoor cushions. Wash, repair, or renewed weather-worn, faded, and ripped cushions with a fresh cover.
5. Food scraps. Fresh ingredients aren’t only beneficial for your diet. Scraps from food prep and leftovers help enrich your garden soil when composted.
6. Paper goods. Use classic utensils when you don’t feel like doing dishes or when you’re taking food to-go. Reuse themed paper products for craft projects or casual meals and snacks.
7. Beach towels. When the fabric starts to fade and thin, they’re still useful in the mudroom to dry off pets or soak up larger messes you don’t want to use good towels for.
8. Grill accessories. After countless outdoor cooking sessions, the grates and scraper may be caked with grime that looks like it will never come off. However, it could just use a good soak and specialized cleaner to save you from having to buy another set.

As the summer starts winding down, there may still be life left in some seasonal items. Think twice about tossing things just because they look used. You may just save some money in the process. Plus, you’ll save these items from piling up in landfills.
