Declutter Your Garden in 7 Steps

Get Your Outdoor Space in Shape this Spring

Spring cleaning isn’t only for the interior of your house. With the warming weather and more regular rain, your grass and plants are returning, which means more attention is needed outdoors. Learn how to declutter your garden to make the most of perennials, introduce new annuals, and get your landscape back in shape this spring.

Declutter Your Garden in 7 Steps

Spring is in bloom, which means your patio, pots, and plants need some maintenance. By managing your landscape and garden storage area now, you’ll get ahead of overwhelming overgrowth later. Here are some steps to help:

  1. Assess. Look around your landscape, shed, garage, and make a list of what should stay or go. List what areas need pruning, planting, replacing, and reorganizing.
  2. Plan. Create a timeline for the project. Break up the outdoor spring cleaning tasks by section. Plan where new plants and transplanting will take place before the weather gets too warm. Make arrangements for yard sales or donating or selling patio items in good condition. Schedule any major patio repairs or landscaping renovations that are needed.
  3. Clear. Focus on getting rid of dead plants, broken pots, and fallen branches first. Compost what you can. Clean out the shed or garage so you know which garden items are still useable.
  4. Organize. Only keep the tools, pots, and decor you’ll be using throughout the season. Make sure the tools are sharp and in working condition. Keep what you need this season within reach.
  5. Prune. Trim any broken, dead, diseased, or overgrown branches that have bloomed already. Wait to trim anything that blooms in the summer or fall.
  6. Divide. Consider relocating some plants to create more space and avoid overcrowding your garden.
  7. Maintain. Regularly removing debris and keeping your garden and storage area tidy helps prevent extensive decluttering in the future.

Even with a plan, the process may become overwhelming, especially if you want to get it all done before an event or summer’s heat. Luckily, there’s help.
