Proper Bulk Trash Disposal

What to do When it’s Too Big for the Can

bulk trash

Sometimes, the amount of junk you want to get rid of exceeds the confines of your trash can. Whether it’s one large item or a pile of debris, there are a few things to consider for proper bulk disposal.

  1. Can it be reused or recycled? If your item is in good shape, consider giving it away to someone or an organization that can use it. Even if it has to be broken down, some items can also be recycled for parts.
  2. Know what can and can’t be dumped. Check your local regulations on what is and is not accepted at the curb or in dumpsters. There may be specific days for bulk pick-up or drop-off points. Electronics and potentially toxic materials have specialized disposal requirements.
  3. Break it down beforehand. If the item can be disassembled, it’s easier to fit in the trash receptacle or be bundled for pick-up.
  4. Illegal dumping comes with fines. You may be tempted to use a nearby dumpster you haven’t rented. Anything left outside for an extended period of time also becomes a fire hazard and breeding ground for pests.
  5. Make it easy for handlers. If you’re leaving something for pick-up, make sure it’s safe to lift by not leaving glass or nails exposed.
  6. Call in the pros. Make it easy on yourself by hiring a junk removal service to take away large items and piles of smaller items.

Getting rid of something large doesn’t have to be a big problem. Consider all of your options and choose the one right for you, your item, and the environment.
