Is it Time to Toss Your Couch?
How to do so Responsibly

Couches are one of the larger pieces of furniture you may often find on the curb—tattered, torn, and typically free. Sometimes the decision to replace your couch comes easily. Other times, it may take more convincing—therefore, more maneuvering if it has to be moved between rooms or homes. So how do you know when it’s time to toss your couch?
When it’s time to toss your couch
Does your current couch have a broken frame, uncomfortable cushions, or strange odor? These are some of the reasons why many couch owners replace this large piece of furniture. Others may want to upgrade or downgrade, depending on the size of the room or family that sits there. Here are some other signs your couch needs replacing.
- Structural damage. If it wobbles on an unstable frame, creaks whenever someone sits, or broken springs start popping through the upholstery, it’s an indication your couch is no longer safe or sturdy.
- Cushion problems. Some may enjoy sinking into a soft couch-like abyss. But flat, saggy, unsupportive cushions defeat the purpose of a comfortable couch.
- Worn or stained fabric. Ripped, faded, and stained fabric doesn’t look especially appealing. If the cushions don’t flip, or another stain resides on the other side, it’s time to consider a new couch—and maybe a protective slipcover.
- Odor. If there’s a persistent smell and you can’t pinpoint a source or stain, it could just be from years of use or past accidents.
- Allergies. Accumulated dust, pet hair, and worn upholstery fibers can trigger allergy symptoms.
- Space. If you’re in the middle of a move or rearranging the room and the couch no longer fits the space, time to go shopping for a new one.
If a couch issue can’t be solved by deep cleaning the upholstery, adding a cover or throw, or flipping a cushion, replacement could be the next step.
