6 Steps to Cleaning Out Your Attic
Why it’s Important Even if it’s Unused

Attic rooms can range from a creaky, creepy, cobwebbed area to a finished space for storage or studying. However you use the space, it should be cleaned for a number of reasons. Here are some tips for cleaning out your attic and why you want to.
Tips for Cleaning Out Your Attic
If you don’t use your attic space often, the dark, quiet area can become an ideal space for mold to grow and pests to nest. Even if you don’t use it for storage, you should still keep it clean and regularly inspect for signs of moisture or uninvited guests.
If you’re considering cleaning it out to expand your living space or use it more for storage, you’ll also want to keep the following tips in mind.
- Prioritize safety. Attics are usually not designed as a livable space. Exposed insulation and open studs require extra care when maneuvering around. Wear protective gear — such as long sleeves and pants, a dust mask, and gloves — and make sure you light the space enough to avoid hazards.
- Clear a path. If the attic is already packed with storage, make space to sort items easily without having to constantly move in and out of the attic, especially if you have restricted access.
- Declutter efficiently. Create piles to keep, donate, and discard. Remember, if the items have been in the attic for over a year, you probably don’t need them. If you want to effectively clean out the space, ideally the donate and discard piles should be larger.
- Clean. Once the space is cleared out, it should be easier to dust and vacuum.
- Inspect. A clear, clean space makes it easier to notice issues such as moisture, mold, pest droppings, and damage. Ensure the area is properly ventilated, especially if you notice signs of mold.
- Organize. Use airtight plastic bins to store any items you’re keeping in the attic. Clearly label each bin to make items easier to find. Group similar items together.
Now that you have a clean, clear, organized attic, it should be less creepy and more versatile to use as storage or additional living space. If you’re left with large donate and discard piles, try to get rid of these items quickly so there’s less chance of them making their way back into the attic.
