Basement Cleanout Tips

Four Steps to a Less Scary Space

Basement Cleanout Tips

The basement is one area of the home that’s often overlooked when it comes to cleaning. Maybe because it’s underutilized if it’s not finished. Some homeowners may also find the creaky steps and lack of lighting creepy. But whatever the reason, cleanliness counts, especially if it’s a storage room. Here are some basement cleanout tips to help overcome the spooky stigma of the space.

Basement Cleanout Tips

Whether your basement is finished or not, it’s still an area that’s prone to dirt and grime. The chances of mold also increase if the space is not properly waterproofed. To help keep things clean and organized, there’s an easy four-step process to cleaning out a basement.

  1. Declutter. Sort items by what you want to keep, sell, donate, or discard. If the area is already packed with stored items, take it section by section, or start with large items you know you want to get rid of. Keep in mind, if you’re storing it in the basement, do you really need to keep it? If you haven’t used it in a year, it’s time to say goodbye.
  2. Clean. Thoroughly clean from top to bottom. Start with the cobwebbed corners and high shelves, wash dusty walls and windows, and finish by mopping floors, making sure it’s fully dry before you move items back in. While you’re scrubbing, notice cracks and crevices that need patching. Replace any air filters and clean vents and ducts.
  3. Organize what you’ll be keeping into labeled bins that are easily stackable. Group similar items, such as seasonal tools and holiday decor.
  4. Maintain the clean, decluttered space by regularly dusting, vacuuming, and checking monthly for moisture and mold.

Once your basement is clean and organized, you may just find another quaint living space or at least an area that doesn’t creep you out as much.
